Enrichment

Thanks to our PTO and a group of very dedicated parent volunteers, we are able to offer several on-site enrichment programs each year to students in all grades. In the past, we've enjoyed programs about native Americans, pioneers, weather, electricity, music, quilting, and many other topics. Our students always enjoy these activities. If you have heard of a program that might be good for the students, please send a note to the office with the information. Thank you to all who make these programs possible!

Program Description

As of September 2009

Power of One – Bulling Program

October 1, 2009

K-3, 4-8, Two Shows

The Power of One is a series of skits presented by actors who use boxes, colors, and masks to vividly portray what bullying is, what can be done about it, and how every child has the power of one, the power to report bullying when they see it. The Power of One:

Old Sturbridge Village, The Traveling Trunk

November 12, 2009

Grades PreK-3

Meet an 1830’s traveler and discover what is in his/her trunk and what it reveals about early American life.

Trailside Museum – Birds of Prey

November 19, 2009

Grades 3&4, 5&6, 7&8, Three Shows

Discover these fascinating creatures and learn what makes them unique hunters and how they fit into the New England ecosystem.  Funded by a Grant from the Trailside Museum and L.L Bean.

Sandy Kieter, The Talking Cello

January 14, 2010

Grades PreK-2

Up close and personal! Story telling and sound effects demonstrate what a cello can do. The one performer-one classroom approach gives kids a hands-on look at music making. Cellist, Sandy Kiefer, demonstrates how music and words connect by telling a story using special sound effects of the cello. The words of the story are then eliminated and only the sound effects remain, allowing children to trace the story by listening. Next, students write their own story as a group, which Sandy performs on the cello. During this interactive program, students use finger math, writing, and drawing skills. Follow up worksheets are left with each class. Sandy Kiefer, educator and cellist, is currently the Suzuki cello teacher at Long School of Music and professor of music at the University of Rhode Island. She designed this engaging program specifically for younger students.

Cooking up Culture – Food from Greece

January

Grades 5 & 8

This unique program, which takes place in the Culinary Arts Department of Boston University, is taught by a culinary professional assisted by students enrolled in the Certificate Program in the Culinary Arts.  The students will have the opportunity to see foods being prepared in the BU demonstration kitchens, learn the ingredients including herbs and other seasonings, and discover how the cuisine came to be.  Following this, a lunch consisting of the prepared foods is enjoyed by the participants.  This year, the students will learn about the food and culture of Greece and Rome.  Funded by a Grant from the Anderson Foundation.

Curriculaughs – Poetry and Language Art

March 4, 2010

All Grades, Three Show

Jeff Nathan, award-winning children’s author and creator of PunOETRY™, has a unique set of hysterically entertaining children’s assemblies that focus on EDUCATIONTHROUGH HUMOR. He's developed some very unique programs that get the right-brain to help the left-brain to open up and learn. Children, while learning poetry and language arts lessons from a different angle, see these new educational adventures as “hilarious” and “fun” while teachers and administrators are just as ecstatic.

Judith Black – Storyteller

April 6, 2010

Prek-8, Three shows:

Pre-K - Grade 2: Folk Tales that will resonate with the children’s developmental stages and The Adventures of Garganchita, an original tale, which addresses issues of diversity.

Grades 3-5:  Stories that speak to our African American heritage including Wagon Wheels, and a folk tale that traveled from Africa to America, and a third story that represents a different cultural vantage point.

Grades 6-8    IT HAPPENED HERE

This is the story of one Jewish family’s Holocaust experience, as told through the eyes of their teenage daughter. The story will be accompanied by a workshop drawing the lessons of the Holocaust into the lives of middle and high school students.
